Trekking to the far end of the world - Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Hidden away from the rest of the world, Torres del Paine National Park in Southern Patagonia, Chile is a beautiful gem that completely blew my mind during our 5 day trek last week. I still dream about it every night and can't wait to go back.

What is it about lighthouses?

I love lighthouses. And I know I'm not the only one. The attraction lighthouses has on me is equivalent to what lots of people feel when they see a brand new Aston Martin in the street or probably how a horse enthusiast feels when a proud Arabic horse is running across the fields in the sunset. There's something magic about them.

Mountains, mountains, mountains. Mountains everywhere you look. And water. Water, water, water. In lakes, rivers or 0.5 halv litre bottles. There are probably more beautiful train rides in this country than the one between the airport of Zürich to the city of Luzern. A train ride in the Swiss mountains is, I would guess, more spectacular, more dramatic and more winding. But the one I did twice last week, was not too bad I must say. Maybe the first class train ticket added to the experience but I must say that Switzerland welcomed me with open arms from the moment I touched Swiss grounds.

The Adventure World Summit is an event that takes place in a different venue every year and it’s organized by the Adventure Travel Trade Association. During four days, devoted people from the outdoor travel industry from all over the world come together to exchange ideas, share their knowledge with each other, get inspired and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings where the Summit is taking place. They are all members of the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and it’s a great opportunity to meet like minded colleagues.

The days were packed with interesting plenary sessions, short and long talks, inspiring key notes, playful entertainment and of course a lot of tasty food. But what stroke me the most, was that the outdoor industry in the rest of the world is actually a REAL industry that people are taking seriously. The toursim has increased 4% every year since a few years back, but during 2011 the outdoor tourism grew 16%!!! That is something we don’t really understand here in Sweden I think. I can’t count the number of times I’ve gotten the question: -So, what do you do as a living, cause I mean, this can’t be real job right?

Working with adventure tourism must be a hobby, many people seem to think. And that view is quite frustrating I must say. So it was super inspiring to meet so many people who actually think they have a ”real” job and that being part of the outdoor tourism industry they even make a lot of good things for the environment with their sustainable approach to the nature they work in.

I got the chance to meet the team behind the ATTA too and I really enjoyed their company. AND I was super impressed with the planning and organization to arrange the World Summit with 650 delegates. Definitely something to learn from. The event ran as a Swiss watch and I hope I get the chance to attend next years Summit, which will be held in Namibia. This is my dream destination number 1 but untill then I have some more sea kayaking to do...

A great thanks to Chris, Carrie, Antonio, Rebeca, Alice, Meredith, Amber, Jason, Shannon, Jessica, Casey, Murray, Chez and Nicole for letting me take part in the Summit. You all did a great job!!!

If you click the pictures, they will be presented in a Light Box.

It was raining most of the time in Lucerne but once in a while the mountains showed them selves to us through the clouds.

And part of the world is of course Sweden. Marcus Eldh from Wild Sweden was there. He's the guy behind the moose.

Okey, an umbrella is not very outdoorish, but I admit it. It was darn good that the hotel could lend me one.

And one day when it stopped raining, I ran through the old town. Next time I will spend more time in the city, cause it's worth it.
