Trekking to the far end of the world - Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Hidden away from the rest of the world, Torres del Paine National Park in Southern Patagonia, Chile is a beautiful gem that completely blew my mind during our 5 day trek last week. I still dream about it every night and can't wait to go back.

What is it about lighthouses?

I love lighthouses. And I know I'm not the only one. The attraction lighthouses has on me is equivalent to what lots of people feel when they see a brand new Aston Martin in the street or probably how a horse enthusiast feels when a proud Arabic horse is running across the fields in the sunset. There's something magic about them.

It's actaully not my fault. I blame my friend Maria.

It was the invitation to her birthday party on Gotland on Saturday the 28th of April that made me start thinking about paddling around the island. She wanted to celebrate her 30th birthday in a fantastic place and since she's been studying on Gotland, she knew there was only one place to go. To Gotland. I immediately accepted the invitation and realised that this is a great excuse to finally see the island. But what if this might be the one and only visit I'll do to the island, would I feel happy to leave the island without not having paddled a single meter in the water that surrounds the island? I soon realised that I was saying no to that question. So should I paddle around the island then? YES!

I am now doing the last preparations for the trip, making sure I bring the things I need. I'm really excited to leave the mainland and I know it's going to be a good feeling to be on the ferry from Oskarshamn to Visby. I just need to buy the ferry tickets first...

Gotland is situated about 90 km off the east coast of Sweden, in the Baltic Sea. It's the biggest island in Sweden (about 3,140 square kilometers) and the nature is very unique here. Lots of lime rocks have been weathered into characteristic karstic rock formations along the coastline, known as rauks. They give the landscape a very different and a "non-Swedish-like" look. There's only a little less than 60.000 people living on the island, so there's lots of spaces for nature, birds and animals to call their homes.

During this trip I won't be blogging while I'm paddling. Just some short updates on my Facebook page for Green Adventures. So please "like" Green Adventures Sweden on Facebook and you will get these updates straight into your computer, or smart phone, or iPad, or Sony Walkman...

When I'm back on the mainland again I'll write some stories and share some pictures on this blog, so please visit the website again in a few weeks.
